The World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Rev. David Philpot who served as the WCC executive secretary for scholarships in 1980s. Philpot passed away at the age of 84 in Edinburgh, UK.

“David was a committed ecumenist who served the ecumenical movement tirelessly and faithfully, both in his work in Kenya and then later when he came to work at the WCC in 1981,” said Tveit in his letter addressed to Philpot’s daughter Anne Wanjie.

As a theologian and author of several publications from the Church of Scotland, Philpot’s contributions to ecumenical education were called “crucial in forming a generation of ecumenical leaders”, in the WCC general secretary’s letter.

“Many church leaders have given testimony to how important it was to receive educational support from the WCC during the time of David’s service, and how such a contribution shaped their own ecumenical formation,” Tveit added.

“We will always remember David’s work ethic, his kindness, compassion for all and his love for his family,” Tveit concluded.

Philpot’s funeral will take place in Edinburgh on Saturday 15 November.
