Daily Bible studies at the Conference on World Mission and Evangelism has been gathering participants from mainline Protestant, Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Evangelical, Pentecostal, and African-instituted churches.

The conference, organized by the World Council of Churches (WCC) with the theme “Moving in the Spirit: Called to Transforming Discipleship,” takes place from 8 to 13 March in Arusha, Tanzania.

The conference committee responsible for worship, Bible study and spiritual exercise commissioned theologians from diverse theological and cultural backgrounds to write studies related to the conference theme Moving in the Spirit: Called to Transforming Discipleship.

Bible study 1 – Following Jesus: Becoming Disciples

Mark 6:1-13

Merlyn Hyde Riley is a minister of the Jamaica Baptist Union and the associate general secretary. She is the president of the Jamaican Council of Churches.

Bible study 2 – Transforming the World, according to Jesus’ Vision of the Kingdom

Matthew 5:1-16

Sahaya G. Selvam, Nairobi, is a Roman Catholic priest, theologian and psychologist (PhD). He is a pastoring/social activist among marginalized youth and sexual minorities in Nairobi. He teaches at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa.

Bible study 3 – Transforming the World: Equipping Disciples

2 Corinthians 5:11-21

Kenneth MTATA is biblical scholar and the current General Secretary of the Zimbabwe Council of Churches. He was a lecturer in South Africa and Germany and former study secretary for Lutheran theology and practice at the Lutheran World Federation in Geneva.

Jennifer S. Leath is Assistant Professor of Religion and Social Justice at Iliff School of Theology and Pastor of Campbell Chapel AME Church (Denver, CO USA).

The WCC Conference on World Mission and Evangelism is held every decade and draws together churches from every denomination to share knowledge and engage in ecumenical dialogue. Held in Tanzania, the conference particularly looks at the challenges and opportunities for Africa today. How can Africa shape mission theology and future practice and how can Africa enhance the understanding of mission in a unique and innovative way, are questions raised during the conference.
