Seminar: the community of Sant'Egidio
Prof. Andrea Riccardi, founder of the Roman Catholic lay community of Sant'Egidio, will give a public seminar on the movement's worldwide work for peace and social justice during his one-day stay in Geneva on Thursday 20.
The seminar hosted by the World Council of Churches (WCC) will take place on
Thursday, 20 September 2007, 02:30 PM
at the Ecumenical Centre’s conference hall
(150 Route de Ferney, Grand-Saconnex; free parking available)
It will include an opportunity for questions and answers.
Based in Rome, the community of Sant’Egidio has become a worldwide movement with some 50,000 members and is well-known for its engagement for peace and social justice. Notably, it played a crucial role in the peace process in Mozambique. Riccardi, who was chosen as one of the “Heroes 2003 – Fighting Hate” by the Time Magazine, founded the community in 1968 in response to the Second Vatican Council.
The seminar is part of a day-long visit to Geneva’s Ecumenical Centre, during which a delegation of the Sant’Egidio community is going to meet the WCC general secretary Rev. Dr Samuel Kobia and other leaders of Christian world organizations and the local Roman Catholic community.
The visit also includes a working session with WCC staff on the Decade to Overcome Violence and the International Ecumenical Peace Convocation marking its conclusion in 2011.
