WCC general secretary addresses Churches' Commission on International Affairs
The Churches' Commission on International Affairs (CCIA) for the World Council of Churches (WCC) is meeting in Tirana, Albania from 2 through 8 October 2010 at the St Vlash Theological Academy in Durrës, Albania. The CCIA dates from 1946 and provides an ecumenical witness on issues and conflicts of global importance.
The Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, WCC general secretary, delivered a speech to the CCIA meeting in which he called on the churches to speak with "one voice of advocacy for peace and justice". The protection of human rights, he said, "should never be seen as a purely secular responsibility... It can never be outside the calling of the church to try to protect and remind states of their responsibility to protect every human being."
