The WCC general secretary paid tribute to Prof. Charles Birch, who recently died. Charles Birch was courageous and prophetic in using his knowledge and enormous gifts as an eminent biologist and a theologian.

"Charles Birch’s scientific and theological foresightedness was such that thirty five years ago he laid down a strong foundation for WCC’s climate change programme.  To date we continue to be inspired by his insights and ideas and for a long time to come we shall remain deeply indebted to this faithful servant of God and humankind."

I have to express my deep gratitude to Dr. Birch because he had inspired my continuous concern on bioethics. Besides, I am honoured having translated his "Living with Animals" into Japanese.
The book's co-author was late Dr. Lukas Vischer, both of them played key role at 2nd World Conference on Church and Society, at MIT, on 1979, to which I was privileged to participate as a delegate from Kyodan.
