One of the most outstanding Caribbean theologians in the ecumenical movement, Philip Potter was chairperson of the World Student Christian Federation 1960-1968, and general secretary of the World Council of Churches 1972-1984. In 1986 he was awarded the Niwano Peace Prize. His eloquent words, inspiring sermons, and unique contribution to ecumenical thinking, theology and action continue to inspire theologians and church leaders today.

The Ecumenical Centre's library is a centre of excellence for the study of ecumenism and inter-religious relations, as well as for the preservation of the historical memory of the ecumenical movement. Today, it contains more than 120,000 volumes, 1300 specialized periodicals, some over a century old, and more than 12,000 boxes of archives containing around 20 million irreplaceable documents.

The Philip Potter Fund is being launched by the World Student Christian Federation’s endowment (the Centennial Fund). Its purpose is to offer opportunities to young people for ecumenical leadership formation through the WSCF. Founded in 1895, the WSCF is a global community of Student Christian Movements committed to dialogue, ecumenism, social justice and peace.

The launch of the Philip Potter Fund will be attended by: Philip Potter himself, as well as the Very Rev. the Hon. Dr Lois Wilson; Rt Rev. Bärbel von Wartenberg-Potter; Dr Pauline Webb; Rev. Dr Samuel Kobia and Rev. Dr Ishmael Noko, as well as many current and past ecumenical leaders.
