Conference builds on the legacy of Orthodox theologian
The work of late Fr Prof. Ion Bria, who acquired worldwide renown as a theologian and ecumenist, is inspiring the works of a theological conference being held 14-16 May in Sibiu, Romania.
Fr Bria "worked tirelessly for and dreamed about the renewal of Orthodox thought in the contemporary world", the World Council of Churches general secretary Rev. Dr Samuel Kobia wrote in a letter to the conference's organizers. He also expressed hope that young Orthodox theologians "will be able to find in Fr Ion Bria's work inspiring elements which will give them new inputs for their own theological and ecumenical reflection".
Organized by the Theological Faculty of Sibiu, the conference looks into the relevance of Fr Bria's work for the church and social life today, as well as to build on its legacy when looking for new directions in research on the doctrine, mission and unity of the church.
Orthodox missiology, a theologically grounded analysis of ecumenical relations and strong advocacy for an active Orthodox participation in the ecumenical movement were key themes of Fr Bria's work.
