A group of Palestinian Christians representing a variety of churches and church-related organizations have issued an animated and prayerful call for an end to occupation of Palestine by Israel.

The call, issued at a 11 December meeting in Bethlehem, comes at a time when many Palestinians believe they have reached a dead end. It raises questions to the international community, political leaders in the region, and the churches worldwide about their contribution to the Palestinian people's pursuit of freedom. Even in the midst of "our catastrophe" the call is described as a word of faith, hope and love.

Referred to as "The Kairos Palestine Document" the call echoes a similar summons issued by South African churches in the mid-1980s at the height of repression under the apartheid regime. That call served to galvanize churches and the wider public in a concerted effort that eventually brought the end of apartheid.

The authors of the Kairos Palestine Document, among them Patriarch Emeritus Michel Sabbah from the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, the Lutheran Bishop of Jerusalem Munib Younan, and Archbishop Theodosios Atallah Hanna of Sebastia from the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem, have raised the challenge of the urgency for peace with justice to religious and political leaders in Palestinian and the Israeli society, international community, and to "our Christian brothers and sisters in the churches" around the world. They believe that current efforts in the Middle East are confined to managing the crisis rather than finding pertinent and long term solutions to the crisis.

Decrying empty promises

Expressing their pain, the signatories of the call decry the emptiness of the promises and pronouncements about peace in the region. They remind the world about the separation wall erected on Palestinian territory, the blockade of Gaza, how Israeli settlements ravage their land, the humiliation at military checkpoints, the restrictions of religious liberty and controlled access to holy places, the plight of refugees awaiting their right of return, prisoners languishing in Israeli prisons and Israel's blatant disregard of international law, as well as the paralysis of the international community in the face of this tragedy.

Rejecting Israeli justifications for their actions as being in self-defence, they unambiguously state that if there were no occupation, "there would be no resistance, no fear and no insecurity."

They argue: "God created us not to engage in strife and conflict but together build up the land in love and mutual respect. Our land has a universal mission, and the promise of the land has never been a political programme, but rather the prelude to complete universal salvation. Our connectedness to this land is a natural right. It is not an ideological or a theological question only." They reject any use of the Bible to legitimize or support political options and positions that are based upon injustice.

Declaring the occupation of Palestinian land as a sin against God and humanity, they steadfastly adhere to the signs of hope such as "local centres of theology" and "numerous meetings for inter-religious dialogue", recognizing that these signs provide hope to the resistance of the occupation. Through the logic of peaceful resistance, resistance is as much a right as it is a duty as it has the potential to hasten the time of reconciliation.

Asserting that this is a moment demanding repentance for past actions, either for using hatred as an instrument of resistance or the willingness to be indifferent and absorbed by faulty theological positions, the group calls on the international community and Palestinians for steadfastness in this time of trial. "Come and see [so we can make known to you] the truth of our reality", they appeal.

Poignantly, they conclude, "in the absence of all hope, we cry out our cry of hope. We believe in God, good and just. We believe that God's goodness will finally triumph over the evil of hate and of death that still persist in our land. We will see here 'a new land' and 'a new human being', capable of rising up in the spirit to love each one of his or her brothers and sisters."

Better late than never
Aaron , 12-12-09 04:32:
Satan deliberately misquotes Scripture to deceive the world, so isn't it quite natural that the authors of the Kairos Palestine Document follow their father, a liar, to promote anti-semitism!
And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. (Genesis 12:3)

I find this excellent document thought-provoking and very humbling. I inadvertently rated it 4-star rather than 5-star.

We all need to pray without ceasing for a just and lasting way forward soon for all who live in this special land.

I had the privilege to be participate in the celebration of the launch of the kairos document in Bethlehem. I was deeply impressed by the spirit of love and reconciliation rather than revenge and bitterness. The document as such might show a weakness here and there. But that it is not the point. Two jewish representatives, a muslim religious leader and a numer of church leaders from all over the world were there. Nobody - especialy not Israeli citizens were denounced. The humanity of every person was emphasized, resistance of love rather than hatred, oppression and dehumnaization was preached. This paper deserves consideration and represents a call for every christian to take a clear stand.

This issue has been troubling for me. Perhaps someone can help me. Everyone calls for the Israeli pull-out but when they do, a Muslim shoots a rocket and it starts all over. How can we support pull-outs if those in the West Bank continue to cause trouble?
David Marshak, Walnut Creek, CA 13-12-09 00:47:
The declaration asserts the supermacy of Jesus. It says those of us who support what Israel are doing are evil. The majority judging the minority and finding us wanting is not at all new in Christian and Muslim relations. Then the love word is thrown in as if that makes it okay to view the minority as agents of evil.

"Nobody - especialy not Israeli citizens were denounced."

What then is the meaning of all the statements about evil?
Geoff Browning, Stanford, California 13-12-09 23:50:
I am very interested in this document but can't help but wonder why Archbishop Chacour is noticeably absent from the list of signatories. Is there a reason for that?
Thank you,
Geoff

Has Aaron ever visited any of the West Bank Arab villages affected by the occupation and talked to their inhabitants? Perhaps he should do so before he flings around charges of anti-Semitism. His words remind me of the Nazis flinging around all sorts of charges against the Jews when justifying the Holocaust. What a tragedy!
David Marshak, Walnut Creek,+CA 14-12-09 18:37:
The wording about the supremacy of Jesus and the evil Jews are doing is unequivocal. It does not take a trip to the West Bank to see that.

These are the spiritual descendents of the Crusaders saying this. The Crusaders had similar views about Jews.

I don't agree with Aaron but what he says simply mirrors what these Christians are saying. That way of viewing Jews is far from new.

It is wrong to treat this as like what the Nazis and South Africans did. But that rhetoric is so well established in the liberal Christian community that these odious comparisons are taken as actual facts rather than generalizations which leave much information out.

Shari, Aaron & David...I urge you to REread the document. The time for paranoia is long past. The suffering is too great to continue to mince words. The "Evil" discussed relates to evil actions. Do not 'hasbaratize' this clear & profound cry of the heart /soul to end the Oppression. Apartheid under military occupation for 60 yrs is cruel, criminal and MUST end.
Shari, if there was no oppression there would be no resistence.
Peace and Justice to all, as the world enters a period of great hope for change. salaam, shalom.
Paul price, Cheshire {United Kingdom} 15-12-09 00:21:
Anyone who claims to be Christian should assess all things through the Lens of scripture, Israel has a right to that land long before any Palestinians or Arabs laid claim to it, this is just another distortion of truth to pressure Israel to give up more land for a false peace signed by Church leaders who are part of Apostate denominations, i dont believe there has been a race of people called Palestinians either genetically, racially or socially it is just an Arab fabrication to get the Jews out of Israel.
Abu Kamogelo, Gauteng, Souh Africa 15-12-09 08:37:
I hope and pray that somebody in the Israeli govt finally listens. The UN has failed to make Israel to comply with the resolutions against their satanic policies in Palestine. Maybe such a document will be of help and maybe then the whole world will take notice of the suffering of the Palesstinian peoples. I also like the absence of any anti-semitic sentiments in the document. Critisism of what Israel is doing should be be labelled as such. Wrong and human rights policies should be criticised unabated, and the world should not be coyed into believing that such criticism is anti-semitic. Amen.
Aaron , 16-12-09 12:54:
The authors of the South African Kairos Document have remained anonymous since its publication in 1985 to avoid arrest, torture or possibly, disappearance and death. The authors of the Palestinian Kairos Document were not afraid to do so, because they do know that Israel respects human rights, unlike Islamic states. Has Sabbah, Younan or any one of the others been missing or found beheaded lately? That alone should tell everyone about the rule of law in Israel and put a lie to such things as political oppression by the Israeli authorities of its political opponents.
Marcelo Souza, Brazil 26-01-10 17:47:
Aaron,

Sorry, but what scriptures are you talking about? The Bible, Kunram, Torah. The Bible should be seen as a whole and not from a singular verse.
Rolf Hinrichs, Germany 27-01-10 27-01-10 16:34:
Did God not create all human beings? Do we not all have equal rights? And is not love the only answer that is just?
