Dear ###USER_name###,
You are getting this email because we thought you might be interested in the Ecumenical Water Network's Seven Weeks for Water 2011, a Lenten Study on Water, Conflict and Just Peace.
Each Monday we will have a new Bible reflection online, along with background information on the week's topic, and a possibility for you to do something practical about water and just peace.
Here's an overview of the issues and reflections for the coming weeks:
Week 1: Land and water
Biblical reflection: Adamah – the land we come from
Ani Ghazaryan, a young theologian from the Armenian Apostolic Church, reflects on the relation between humankind and earth.
Week 2: Oil and water in Nigeria
Biblical reflection: Transforming the bitter waters of Marah
Rev. Canon Dr Ezekiel Babatunde, director of the Institute of Church and Society of the Christian Council of Nigeria, looks at the story of the Exodus and reflects on environmental damage and economic injustice.
Week 3: Commodification of water
Biblical reflection: The Earth is the Lord’s
Shantha Ready Alonso and Linwood Blizzard II from the World Student Christian Federation look at justice and care for creation in the context of the privatization and commercialization of water.
Week 4: Women, water, violence
Biblical reflection: Water the source of life – and not of violence
Rev. Dr Priscille Djomhoue, professor at the Protestant University of Central Africa in Cameroon, explores biblical narratives of women’s experiences at the well.
Week 5: Water conflict in the Holy Land
Biblical reflection: Wells of quarrel – space for peace
Fr Afrayem Elorshalimy from the Coptic Orthodox Church reflects on wells and water as sources of dispute in the Bible, and on the realization that land and water are a gift of God for all of us.
Week 6: Climate change refugees
Biblical reflection: Noah: an uprooted pilgrim
Dr Guillermo Kerber, programme executive on climate justice at the World Council of Churches, reflects on the need for conversion in the light of our violent behaviour against our neighbours and against the earth.
Week 7: Water for Guatemala's landless
Biblical reflection: We chose to do your will
José Pilar Alvarez from the Lutheran Church of Guatemala writes about the role of faith for communities who defend the land and water they depend on.
We look forward to accompanying you during your Lenten journey.
Sincerely,
Maike Gorsboth
