Rev. Dr Ioan Sauca, Director

The director of the Ecumenical Institute is a priest of the Romanian Orthodox Church and lectures in missiology and ecumenical theology. He taught missiology and ecumenism in his home country at the Faculty of Theology in Sibiu, Romania. A graduate of the Ecumenical Institute, Sauca holds a Ph.D. in missiology from the University of Birmingham, Great Britain. Appointed director of the Ecumenical Institute in 2001, Sauca also heads the education and ecumenical formation programme of the WCC.

Rev. Dr Odair Pedroso Mateus, Professor of Ecumenical Theology

A pastor of the Independent Presbyterian Church of Brazil, Mateus worked in the Office for Theology and Ecumenical Engagement in the World Alliance of Reformed Churches and edited its quarterly journal Reformed World. A graduate of the Ecumenical Institute, he holds a Ph.D. in theology from the Faculty of Protestant Theology of the Marc Bloch University, in Strasbourg, France. From 2007, he is lecturing at the Ecumenical Institute and participating in the work of WCC's Faith and Order. The chair of Ecumenical Theology is supported by the US-based Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

Rev. Dr Dagmar Heller, Professor of Ecumenical Theology

An ordained pastor seconded to the WCC by the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD), Heller holds a Ph.D. in church history from the University of Heidelberg. She worked in her church's international and ecumenical relations department. Starting in 2007, she is combining teaching at Bossey with tasks in the WCC's Faith and Order Commission.

Rev. Dr Paul Isaak, Professor of Missiology

An ordained Lutheran pastor, Isaak received his Ph.D. from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. Isaak taught theology in his home country at the University of Namibia before joining the Bossey faculty in 2007. The chair of missiology is entirely supported by three mission organizations working in partnership with the Ecumenical Institute: The Council for World Mission (UK); United Evangelical Mission - Communion of Churches in three Continents (Germany); and Cevaa; Communauté d'Eglises en Mission (France).

Dr Amélé Ekué, Professor of Ecumenical Social Ethics

Ekué was senior lecturer at the Institute for Ecumenics, Missiology and Religious Studies at the Faculty of Protestant Theology of the University of Hamburg, where she also received her Ph.D. A member of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD), she has dual German and Togolese nationality. Ekué joined Bossey in 2007, combining teaching responsibilities with work on migration issues in the WCC.

Rev. Dr Gervasis Karumathy, Professor of Biblical Hermeneutics

A Catholic Old Testament scholar from Kerala, India, Karumathy gained his Ph.D. in Biblical exegesis from the Pontificium Institutum Biblicum in Rome. He taught Biblical languages and exegesis at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas and the Pontifical Gregorian University. In 2006, he was appointed by the Vatican to teach at the Ecumenical Institute.
