Der Ökumenische Rat der Kirchen (ÖRK) ist vom 16.-18. Oktober 2002 Gastgeber einer internationalen Konsultation zum Thema "Christen und Muslime im Dialog und darüber hinaus". Die Tagung wird im Ökumenischen Zentrum in Genf stattfinden.
Dr. Tarek Mitri, ÖRK-Mitarbeiter im Team für Interreligiöse Beziehungen und Dialog, erklärte, der ÖRK habe 40 Teilnehmer und Teilnehmerinnen eingeladen, um "eine kritische Beurteilung des gegenwärtigen Stands der Beziehungen zwischen christlichen und muslimischen Gemeinschaften vorzunehmen und eine Bilanz dessen zu ziehen, was erreicht worden ist". Laut Mitri sollen auch die "künftigen Prioritäten erörtert werden", die sich erwartungsgemäß auf das gemeinsame Handeln auf Ortsebene konzentrieren werden.
Ko-Moderatoren der Konsultation sind der Vorsitzende des ÖRK-Zentralausschusses, S.S. Aram I., Katholikos des Stuhls von Kilikien der Armenischen Apostolischen Kirche (Antelias, Libanon), und Dr. Mohamed S. El-Awa, Anwalt und Rechtswissenschaftler aus Ägypten.
U.a. werden folgende Redner zu dem Eröffnungsthema "Reflexionen zum gegenwärtigen Stand der muslimisch-christlichen Beziehungen" sprechen:

S.E. Sayyid Mohammad Ali Abtahi, Präsident des Instituts für Interreligiösen Dialog und Vizepräsident der Islamischen Republik Iran

S.E. Dr. Hamid Bin Ahmand Al-Rifaie, Präsident, Internationales Islamisches Forum für Dialog.
S.E. Erzbischof Michael Fitzgerald, Präsident des Päpstlichen Rates für den Interreligiösen Dialog, und Pfr. Dr. Konrad Raiser, Generalsekretär des Ökumenischen Rates der Kirchen, äußern sich aus christlicher Perspektive zu diesem Thema.

Journalisten und Journalistinnen können am Mittwoch, dem 16. Oktober bis 16.00 Uhr an den Sitzungen im Ökumenischen Zentrum teilnehmen.
Um 12.30 Uhr findet im Konferenzsaal des Ökumenischen Zentrums eine Pressekonferenz auf Englisch statt.
Die Teilnehmenden stehen auf Anfrage für Interviews zur Verfügung. Das Zentrum verfügt über eine ISDN-Linie.
