Konferenz Europäischer Kirchen

Die Konferenz Europäischer Kirchen (KEK) ist eine ökumenische Gemeinschaft von Kirchen Europas, die den Herrn Jesus Christus gemäß der Heiligen Schrift als Gott und Heiland bekennen und darum gemeinsam zu erfüllen trachten, wozu sie berufen sind, zur Ehre Gottes, des Vaters, des Sohnes und des Heiligen Geistes.

Die Bewegung, aus der die Konferenz Europäischer Kirchen (KEK) hervorgegangen ist, entstand in der Zeit des Kalten Krieges. Das zerstörte und geteilte Europa der 1940-er und 50-er Jahre musste zunächst politische Spaltungen überwinden, um sich erneut den Völkern zuwenden zu können, die der Zweite Weltkrieg auseinander gerissen hatte. In dieser Zeit begann eine kleine Gruppe kirchenleitender Persönlichkeiten in Ost- und Westeuropa Möglichkeiten zu erörtern, Kirchen in europäischen Ländern mit unterschiedlichen politischen, wirtschaftlichen und gesellschaftlichen Systemen miteinander ins Gespräch zu bringen. Die Gruppe hatte sich zum Ziel gesetzt, den europäischen Kirchen zu helfen, Werkzeuge des Friedens und der Verständigung zu werden.

1953 und 1957 fanden Sondierungs- und Vorbereitungsgespräche statt, und 1959 kamen Vertreter und Vertreterinnen aus über 40 Kirchen in Nyborg Strand, Dänemark, zur ersten Vollversammlung der KEK zusammen. Zu jener Zeit bestand die Organisation in einem losen Zusammenschluss von Kirchen, doch mit der Annahme einer Verfassung auf der Vollversammlung 1964 wurde ein bedeutender Schritt zur Bildung einer regionalen Kirchenkonferenz getan. Diese Vollversammlung fand auf einem Schiff auf der Ostsee statt, um Visaprobleme zu umgehen und sicherzustellen, dass alle Kirchen vertreten sein konnten.

Die KEK hat sich beständig bemüht, die internationale Verständigung zu fördern, und darauf bestanden, dass zwischen den Kirchen kein "Eiserner Vorhang" bestehen darf. Die KEK hat auch versucht, Brücken zwischen Minderheits- und Mehrheitskirchen, zwischen den Generationen, zwischen Frauen und Männern sowie zwischen Christen verschiedener Konfessionen zu schlagen. Die Vollversammlungen der KEK stellen für die Kirchen in Europa bedeutsame Momente in ihren Bemühungen um ein gemeinsames Zeugnis dar.

Die Themen dieser Vollversammlungen spiegeln den Willen der europäischen Kirchen wider, sich für Dienst und Versöhnung einzusetzen und auf die Herausforderungen einer zunehmend säkularisierten Gesellschaft einzugehen. Infolge der politischen Veränderungen von 1989 wurden die Europäische Ökumenische Kommission für Kirche und Gesellschaft - ein Gremium westeuropäischer Kirchen - und die KEK 1999 zur KEK-Kommission für Kirche und Gesellschaft zusammengeschlossen. Aus der Zusammenarbeit der KEK mit dem Rat der europäischen Bischofskonferenzen (römisch-katholische Kirche) sind die Europäischen Ökumenischen Versammlungen hervorgegangen: "Friede in Gerechtigkeit" 1989 in Basel, Schweiz; "Versöhnung, Gabe Gottes und Quelle neuen Lebens" 1997 in Graz, Österreich; sowie "Das Licht Christi scheint auf alle – Hoffnung auf Erneuerung und Einheit in Europa" 2007 in Sibiu, Rumänien.

Neben der Kommission für Kirche und Gesellschaft, die sich auf den europäischen Integrationsprozess sowie auf Friedens- und Menschenrechtsfragen konzentriert, hat die KEK eine Kommission "Kirchen im Dialog", die sich mit Einheit und Mission befasst. Die Kommission der Kirchen für Migranten in Europa (KKME) mit Sitz in Brüssel arbeitet an den Themen Migration, Integration, Flüchtlinge, Asyl und bekämpft Rassismus und Diskriminierung in Europa. KKME und KEK arbeiten seit 1999 offiziell in diesen Bereichen zusammen und befinden sich jetzt in einem Integrationsprozess. Ein weiterer wichtiger Aufgabenbereich sind die Beziehungen zum Islam in Europa. Zu diesem Anliegen arbeitet die KEK mit dem Rat der europäischen Bischofskonferenzen zusammen.

Der KEK gehören 120 Mitgliedskirchen in 38 Ländern an, ferner 43 assoziierte Organisationen, mehrheitlich nationale Kirchenräte. Die Konferenz unterhält Büros in Genf, Brüssel und Straßburg.
