Minute on Cyprus


Adopted by the Executive Committee, Geneva, 29 February – 3 March 2000.


The Executive Committee of the World Council of Churches, meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, 29 February – 3 March 2000, received with appreciation information on the WCC delegation visit to Cyprus in October 1999, which included a first WCC visit to the Turkish-occupied territory of Cyprus since the “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus” was unilaterally declared in 1983.

Recalling its Statement on Cyprus (1997), the Executive Committee

Warmly welcomed the resumption of UN-led proximity talks on Cyprus and prays that they will pave the way as soon as possible for substantive negotiations leading to a just and peaceful resolution of the conflict;

Expressed its support for the UN Secretary-General's efforts to bring about a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem;

Requested staff and member churches to continue to monitor closely developments in Cyprus and to encourage the Church of Cyprus and all members of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot civil society in efforts for justice, peace and reconciliation.
